Between 1956 and 1958, the LKZ Design Bureau, under the leadership of Chief Designer Zh. Ya. Kotin, developed a project for a new tank. Two prototypes were produced, which underwent testing from 1959 to early 1960. To test the tank's strength and effectiveness, a hull and turret were also built and used for firing tests at a firing range.
However, in the summer of 1960, work on this tank was discontinued. This decision was made due to the imperfections of some systems and components that had not been sufficiently tested, as well as the lack of tactical and technical advantages compared to the Object 770 heavy tank.
