42 years after the events of System Shock 1, Tri-Optimum Corporation, with the support of the United Nations Nominee UNN, creates and launches the first Faster-Than-Light (FTL) spaceship Von Braun. The idea for the FTL drive belongs to M. Delacroix, a Nobel Prize winner who became the ship's Chief Design Engineer. The ship's security was to be ensured by the docked destroyer Rickenbaker, commanded by W.B. Diego, son of E. Diego, the man responsible for the Citadel Station tragedy in 2072. Von Braun's captain was A. Korenechkin, a greedy and avaricious UNN official with little flight experience, promoted to high command for political reasons. The game's central role is played by a common soldier who, four years before VB's flight, enlisted in the UNN as a space marine and completed four years of training. Having been accepted for the flight and serving on the destroyer Rickenbaker as a simple security officer, he agreed to undergo a neural-cybernetic interface implantation surgery at the suggestion of Dr. J. Polito, head of the ship's operations and computing center. Upon awakening, the soldier found himself a human cyborg, partially lost his memory of recent events, and horrified to discover that the vast majority of the crew had either perished or transformed into horrific mutant hybrids, while a new life form unknown to Earth science had appeared on the ship. Fortunately, Dr. Polito was able to contact him, informing him that he must meet her in her private office on Deck 4 of the ship.
What lies behind all this, what will the soldier discover upon reaching Polito's office, and what consequences will follow?
