The 21st century was supposed to herald the dawn of a new era. The wars, famines and suffering of the last 20 millennia were to be a distant, fading memory as scientific advances brought global peace and prosperity. By the end of the 20th century, the now-forgotten US president went so far as to formally announce the arrival of a New World Order in which law, not force, would govern international relations. This bright future was not destined to come true. First came the collapse of the international stock and currency exchanges. Then the big international conglomerates were dissolved in a futile attempt to stop the fiscal bleeding. By 2012, the global economy had collapsed. Poverty and hunger have led to increased social and political tensions. As the crisis continued, few were bold or naive enough to predict anything positive for the future. Most understood that the planet was on the verge of global conflict. In 2048, the anticipated global conflict erupted with violence that shook the planet to its foundations. All major centralized governments were destroyed in a whirlpool. Europe and East Asia bore the brunt of the destruction, as entire urban centers from Madrid to Moscow and from Seoul to Singapore were literally razed to the ground.
