Death Stranding takes place in a post-apocalyptic future on the territory of the former United States of America, destroyed by the invasion of ghostly creatures from another world. The player controls the courier Sam (Norman Reedus) - a kind of post-apocalyptic postman; he is faced with the task of crossing the continent and linking isolated settlements to each other. Death Stranding combines free-roaming through an open world where the player must find their own way to the next goal, and long cinematic cutscenes created in the game engine using motion capture technology. The main gameplay is related to the transfer of valuable packages from one settlement to another, and the player must avoid losing and damaging the cargo; the game contains an unusually well-developed mechanics of moving across rough terrain and elements of an asynchronous multiplayer game.

Death Stranding received critical acclaim; most reviewers noted the extreme originality and unusualness of the game, which does not fit into the usual genre framework, and also praised the graphics, musical accompaniment and acting.
