Empires of the Undergrowth is a fast-paced strategy game where you control a colony of ants. You will set up an underground nest, digging a network of underground tunnels and chambers to store resources, and raise brood before emerging to the surface. There, your ants will have to capture territory, collect resources and confront terrifying opponents. The most important factors for achieving victory are nest arrangement, army size and composition, and understanding when to attack and when to retreat.

Formicarium

Empires of the Undergrowth's fully voice-acted campaign features two game modes. The first is the formicarium, where you start the game with just a queen and a few workers. During the game you will have to survive the experiments of a mad scientist, developing a colony and genetically adapting ants to survive in experimental conditions. From the formicarium you can also launch single missions, in which you will control various ant colonies. To open new missions, you must successfully complete the scientist's tests.

Stories inspired by documentaries

“Your queen founded her colony under a rotting log. She is thick and vulnerable. Her first offspring must work quickly for the colony to survive. Finding food is a task of paramount importance for them. There's enough of it around. But there are other hungry creatures nearby. We need to work quickly and quietly so as not to disturb them.”

The narrator narrates the plot in the format of a documentary about ants, explaining what is happening in the colony itself and in the undergrowth on the surface.

Missions are divided into groups, of which there will be five in the full version of the game (four are currently available). Each group's missions are presented in a nature documentary format that combines scientific accuracy with challenging gameplay. In each group of levels you can control one type of ant, each of which has its own characteristics and a playstyle suitable for it. The levels feature different ecosystems that reflect the natural habitats of the corresponding ant species.

Brown forest ants

The queen of brown forest ants burrowed into the ground under a log after mating. After her first brood is born, the ants will have to provide her with food, expand the nest, and fight off the deadly beetles and spiders lurking nearby.

Red forest ants

The queen of red wood ants has taken over the nest of another species of ants, killing their queen and taking her place. Thanks to the proximity of the beach, the colony can feed on seafood, but many other hungry creatures and ants from hostile colonies roam the coastal area.
