Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (IATA: SHA, ICAO: ZSSS) is one of two international airports in Shanghai, China's largest city by population and an important aviation hub for the country. Hongqiao Airport serves primarily domestic and regional flights, although it also handles some international flights (primarily to Seoul–Gimpo, Taipei–Songshan, and Tokyo–Haneda). The airport is located near the city of Hongqiao on the outskirts of Changning and Minhang Districts, 13 kilometers (8.1 miles) west of the city center, closer to the city center than the district's main international airport, Shanghai Pudong Airport.
Hongqiao Airport is the headquarters and primary hub for China Eastern Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, and Juneyao Air, as well as a major hub for Spring Airlines. In 2016, Hongqiao Airport handled 40,460,135 passengers, ranking 7th busiest in China and 43rd busiest worldwide. By the end of 2011, Hongqiao Airport served 22 airlines on 82 scheduled routes. In 2019, Shanghai Hongqiao Airport received a five-star rating from Skytrax for its terminal facilities, comfort, and cleanliness, the availability of shops, restaurants, and bars, and staff service.
Hongqiao Airport served as Shanghai's primary airport until the completion of Pudong International Airport on October 1, 1999, when most international flights gradually moved to Pudong.
